Rain water harvesting

Here's a short video of our rain water harvesting system. It currently holds 220 gallons and is powered by a 12v pump from a bank of marine batteries that are in turn charged from an array of solar panels.

If you have any specific questions I could probably answer them. It really wasn't that difficult to put together and only took one day.

  1. Nice set up. What kind of pump did you use? I mean specific name etc.

  2. It's a 12v pump from a salvaged motorhome. The brand is Aquajet and the model is 55-aquajet-aes. I picked it up for $50.00

  3. Not too shabby at all! The batteries are the thing that kicked my rear with solar power. Check the water, be sure you equalize the batteries, keep them charged but not too much...... Then after three years I had to replace the things. I am waiting to see how your operation works out. You seem to have a better handle on it than I did in 1999.

  4. Thanks. The part that makes it easier is learning from all the great people who have tried it before me. I can skip some of the learning curve, which helps out a bunch.

  6. Thanks for checking up on me. I am still here, yes. Haven't been down to the property for a month or so. Some personal issues are taking precedence right now. Everyone is in good health.

  8. If anyone is interested in sharing their story about their transition into living off the grid, here is a wonderful opportunity.

Nick Rosen, author of 'How to live off-grid' and 'Off the grid,' is making a documentary about the ways you can go off the grid and the people who are doing it. The aim is a how-to, told through the eyes of people who are currently or have just made the transition to living off the grid, but also a why-to -- why do people choose to leave society behind?

You can see a video about our project and read all about the film at Indiegogo (www.indiegogo.com/off-grid), where you can also donate funds to the production, in return for perks such as a copy of the eventual movie, and his book ‘Off the Grid: Inside the Movement for More Space, Less Government, and True Independence in Modern America,’ or even a day with Nick touring off-grid locations.

Please give generously and see our documentary series become a reality.
